The first personal injury laws appeared more than 4,000 years ago in the Code of Ur-Nammu, the oldest surviving legal code known to history. Long before modern courts and lawsuits, ancient Sumerian law required compensation for injuries such as broken bones, lost teeth, and severed limbs. In 1928, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that women were not “persons” eligible for appointment to the Senate.

The Famous Five refused to accept that answer.

One year later, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council overturned the decision, confirming that women were included as “qualified persons” under section 24 of the Constitution Act, 1867.

The Persons Case did more than open the Senate to women. It also helped establish the “living tree” doctrine—the principle that Canada’s Constitution must be capable of growth and adaptation as society changes.

The case was a major turning point, but it did not create full equality overnight. Its history is more complicated, and more important, than the simplified version many of us were taught.

A new licence called the Family Legal Services Provider allows trained paralegals to assist with low conflict, procedural family law issues.

They can help with:
• Uncontested or joint divorces
• Child support paperwork and recalculations
• Separation, cohabitation, and marriage agreements where terms are already agreed
• Family court forms and filing steps

They cannot handle contested matters or appear in court.
