Because somewhere, right now, an exhausted clerk is being buried alive under probate forms, estate accounts, receipts, tax returns, bank statements, missing documents, and “just one more thing” emails.

The process is rarely quick. Estate files are paperwork-heavy, detail-driven, and often slowed by missing information, court timelines, financial institutions, and good old-fashioned bureaucracy.

In other words: it’s not always chaos… but sometimes chaos does wear a tie. Estate accounting is not for the weak.

In 1928, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that women were not “persons” eligible for appointment to the Senate.

The Famous Five refused to accept that answer.

One year later, the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council overturned the decision, confirming that women were included as “qualified persons” under section 24 of the Constitution Act, 1867.

The Persons Case did more than open the Senate to women. It also helped establish the “living tree” doctrine—the principle that Canada’s Constitution must be capable of growth and adaptation as society changes.

The case was a major turning point, but it did not create full equality overnight. Its history is more complicated, and more important, than the simplified version many of us were taught.

• Uncontested or joint divorces
